He Called His Website a Goldfish Brain. Then He Booked More Jobs.

The Joke at the BBQ

Marcus had been roofing in Leeds for 19 years. His vans were clean, his crew showed up on time, and his work was solid. He also had a website built in 2016 by his nephew who'd watched three YouTube tutorials.

On a Saturday in March, at a trade association BBQ where about 40 local contractors had gathered, someone asked Marcus what he was doing online. He took a sip of lager and said, without missing a beat: "My website? It's like a goldfish brain. Technically it exists. Does absolutely nothing."

Everyone laughed. His business partner, Claire, laughed too. But she was already pulling up her phone.

The Punchline That Was Actually a Wound

Claire showed him her screen. A competitor 6 miles away, founded in 2019 with two vans and no reputation, was ranking number one for "roofer Leeds" on Google Maps. They had 87 reviews. Marcus had 4.

"That's a local service business website doing its job," Claire said, not unkindly. "Yours is the goldfish brain."

The joke landed differently the second time. Marcus went quiet for about four seconds, then asked how much it would cost to fix. Not a rhetorical question. An actual one.

What Marcus Tried First (and Why It Failed)

Marcus is not a person who wastes time, so he called three agencies within the week. Two quoted him £8,000 and a 6-week timeline. One sent a 40-page PDF that used the word "ecosystem" seven times. He put his phone down and went back to measuring a hip roof.

The problem was not money. The problem was that every pitch treated his website like a design project, not a job generator. Nobody mentioned Google Business Profile. Nobody mentioned what would happen at 7am on a Tuesday when a homeowner searched "emergency roofer Leeds" and called the first name they saw.

He kept losing jobs to people who looked more professional online. That is not a small thing when your average roof replacement is £6,000 to £12,000.

The Demo-First Difference

When Marcus found S7 Digital, the first thing we did was not send a proposal. We built his site.

A real, working demo. Mobile-first, fast loading, optimised for local search. It went live as a preview URL and we sent it to him on a Thursday. By Friday he had forwarded it to three of his crew with the message "is this us?" because it looked like what he already was, just... visible.

The site went fully live six days later. Google Business Profile was claimed, verified, and optimised within the same week. By the third week, Marcus was appearing in the map pack for three key search terms in his patch.

The Part Nobody Talks About: What Happens After Launch

A local service business website that books nothing is still a goldfish brain. Pretty, maybe, but functionally dead.

So we set up appointment booking automation on his site. A homeowner can now call at 11pm on a Sunday, describe their leaking flat roof, and the system qualifies the job, checks Marcus's calendar, and books the next available slot. No voicemail. No missed calls at 6am before he's had coffee. The AI Meeting Scheduling layer handles the back-and-forth without him lifting a finger until the job is confirmed.

We also wired up review collection. Every completed job triggers a follow-up that asks for a Google review. Marcus went from 4 reviews to 61 in four months. His Google Maps visibility improved so dramatically that he started turning down work, which is a very different problem from the one he had in March.

The appointment booking automation alone saved him an estimated £2,400 per month in lost calls during his working hours. He was losing 14 to 18 calls a week that he simply could not answer because he was on a roof.

The Numbers Behind the Joke

Here is what changed in the first 90 days:

  • Google Maps ranking: from not appearing to top 3 for "roofer Leeds" and two related terms
  • Inbound calls per week: 11 to 47
  • Booked jobs per month: 6 to 22
  • Reviews collected: +57
  • Estimated revenue recovered from previously lost jobs: roughly £12,000 in the first quarter alone

That last number is not vanity. That is the difference between Marcus's goldfish brain website and one that actually works. He was good at roofing. The internet was just not letting people know that.

The Joke Was Right About One Thing

Marcus was correct that his old website did nothing. It sat there like a business card in a drawer, gathering dust while competitors who understood that showing up on Google is the new word of mouth ate his pipeline.

But the joke also revealed something deeper. Most local service business owners are not stupid. They just do not have time to learn how local SEO, mobile-first website design, and Google Business Profile optimisation all connect. They need someone who can walk in, build the thing that works, and make it visible in a few days. Not 6 weeks. Not after a 40-page proposal.

The goldfish brain was never about Marcus's technical knowledge. It was about the fact that nobody had ever handed him something that worked and said, "here, this is yours, it books jobs while you sleep."

What This Means for Your Business

If you are running a local service business and your website was built more than three years ago (or by someone who learned web design from a YouTube tutorial), it is probably doing very little for you. Not because you are bad at what you do, but because the rules of how people find tradespeople changed around 2018 and nobody sat you down to explain it.

The businesses winning right now are not the ones with the best work. They are the ones that show up on Google when a potential customer is in pain, searching at 10pm, ready to call the first name they see. If you are not that name, you are invisible.

And invisibility costs real money. For Marcus it was £12,000 in one quarter. For a dental practice it might be a waiting list that never fills. For a law firm it might be the small claims cases that go to a competitor because the competitor had appointment booking automation and they did not.

The Lesson

Jokes make great icebreakers at BBQs. They also make terrible business strategy.

Marcus's goldfish brain website was funny for about four seconds. The revenue it cost him was not funny at all. The fix was straightforward: a mobile-first website built in days, not months. Google Business Profile properly set up so his business shows up on the map. Appointment booking automation handling calls and scheduling around the clock. Review collection that compounds over time.

None of this requires you to become a marketer. None of it requires a 6-week project or a £10,000 invoice. It requires someone who builds the thing, makes it visible, and gets out of the way so you can go back to doing what you are good at.

If your website is currently a goldfish brain, and you would rather be fixing roofs or seeing patients instead of staring at a 40-page PDF that uses the word "ecosystem," send me a direct message. I will build you a working demo before we even have a proper sales conversation. You will see exactly what you are getting. No proposal. No jargon. Just the thing, built and live, so you can decide with your eyes open.

Click here to send me a DM on LinkedIn and we will get the demo started this week.
